Smoking: the last taboo

The last taboo. This is a photo of forced smoking. One person forcing the other to smoke. This photo was done for people into the smoking fetish scene. The models are Honey Manko and Queen Ivana.

This was a one time event and took a lot of preparation. Queen Ivana and Honey Manko took a long time to get dressed and put make up on. To get in the right frame of mind they drank 6 bottles of wine. When we had finished the first photo session, we staggered out into the streets to get more drink and cigarettes from the shop. Once in public and fully in character, Queen Ivana and Honey Manko strutted their stuff to the adoring public. A lot of heads were turned and there were several near car crashes. They were papped by a Daily Mirror photographer after coming out of the shop. The Daily Mirror knows a star when they see them! After creating as much mayhem as possible, Queen Ivana and Honey Manko retired back into their boudoirs for a smoke. I was inspired! These photos came out of that smoking session. And smoking it was!

Bonnie and Alex

I took this photo of Bonnie Baker and Alex Cawkwell the last night at the masked ball. The last night of Iconography of mask show at the Resistance Gallery in July 2009. Bonnie and Alex were two of the artists that created masks for the exhibit.

Chinese

This photo was taken of Jason Atomic on the last night of the Iconography of Mask event. We ate at a really good Chinese restaurant before the masked ball.

Iconography of mask paper bags

This is a photo of do it yourself paper bag masks. There was a workshop on masks at the the three day Iconography of masks event. Kim led the workshop. She was fascinating. She had an amazing collection of fetish masks dating back to the '50s to the present time. She's a dominatrix and a true life fetish queen who has been one of the main organizers of London's legendary fetish club, Club Rub. At one point during the workshop, Kim, gave all the participants a paper bag and asked them to make a mask out of the bag. These are some of the results. The bag masks in the photo include ones from artist and fetish model Debbie Griffin, the Lucha Libre wrestler Shiro Yoshida and Noko from the band Apollo 440.The paper bag session in the workshop features in the film/trailer that is on this website

Lady Onna

I was upstairs at the gallery after a long night of filming and I noticed Lady Onna and a photographer busy at work. I joined them and these photos are the result. Lady Onna is a creative entrepreneur. She works with latex and other composite materials. She is currently working on several film projects with production, acting and styling.

This is a photo of FERAL. FERAL was the perfect masked musician vocalist to have perform at Iconography of Mask. She always performs in mask. Her shows are intense, confrontational and you can dance too! She makes fun of the corporate masks of normalcy and complacency. She is on a mission to take on the war mongering consumerist culture spreading across the globe. This is according to the book “Club Kids” that she features in.

This is a photo of Alex Cawkwell. A photo of a deranged artist. Watch out! He bites! He created a very unique piece for the event. "It was kind of a rotten zombie prince mask made out of old insoles and covered in paint mixed with urine." - A Honey Manko description that I had to add!

I was in London filming the Iconography of Mask event at the Resistance gallery at the end of July 2009. It was an event put on by Jason Atomic and Resistance Gallery curator Garry Vanderhorne: A three day event of well-known international artist’s masks being exhibited (they created the masks specifically for this show) live masked music performance, workshops and masked wrestling. It was an amazing experience. Please watch the Iconography of Mask trailer that I have in the examples of my film work in the webpage. I did manage to take some photos through the three day event, but for the most part I was too busy filming the event.

This is a photo of Garry Vanderhorne (on the left) in his Lucha Britannia mask with a mysterious friend. Garry is the owner and curator of the Resistance Gallery. The gallery is a unique multi-functional arts, performance & gallery space in the creative heart of Bethnal Green, London E2.

I should also mention something about Garry’s madcap cabaret Mexican wrestling group Lucha Britannia. What to say about it? Lucha Britannia is an underground spectacular where the audience is encouraged to dress as outrageously as they like and are as much a part of the entertainment than anything, but Lucha Britannia has to be experienced to be believed!
