There is a tradition of three generations of the Czech Burian family as musicians. The grandfather EF Burian died almost five decades ago. He was a composer and a director of a modern theatre. Pictured here is father and son Jan and Jiri Burian.
The father is a musician, singer, songwriter, poet, publicist, composer & anchorman. As a song maker and pianist he has staged over 3800 performances in clubs and theaters around the Czech and Slovak Republic. In the past couple of years several his books have been published in this country. He is a kind of a 21st century renaissance figure. He writes poems and sings on his own records, but also has a regular program on Czech TV, called Burian’s Cultural Sanatorium. He has a show on Czech Radio, and is also the author of several travelogues – he has written about trips to New York, Denmark, Iceland and Chile.
Jiri has been playing music with father since he was 8. Jiri goes by the stage name Gregory Finn and leads a band called Southpaw. The band started in 1996. They were originally Inspired by the legendary band The Smiths He chose the stage name Gregory Finn because he didn’t want people to think he was taking advantage of the family name. Jiri/Gregory has a new music project/band called Men are Fragile. Both father and son still play music together. I took this photo a long time ago. Jan Burian had a concert at Archa Theatre and I took this photo before the concert. If I am not mistaken Jiri performed with him that night.
