Josef Rauvolf is known for bringing the beat generation writing and underground culture to the Czech Republic. Although he now works as the Culture Editor of the Czech magazine Instinkt, Josef Rauvolf is perhaps best known as the Czech translator of American Beat writers such as William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. His translations of Burroughs’ novels Naked Lunch and Junky are very popular and have sold thousands of copies. He has also helped make acclaimed documentaries on underground cultures in both the US and Communist Czechoslovakia. He also did documentaries for Czech TV about the early New York punk scene and other alternative scenes.
