The Globe Bookshop/Café opened in 1993. It was at the height of the post-revolution expatriate life. It was said that over thirty thousand Americans were living in Prague at that time. I do not know if that was true, but I do know five Americans opened the original Globe in Prague’s Holešovice district. The place had a great atmosphere. There were many nice relaxed evening gatherings, chess games and friendly readings with emerging writers, poets and entertainers of all sorts. There were a lot of readings by well known writers such as; William Styron, Jáchym Topol, Richard Ford, Ivan Klíma, Amy Tam, Ludvík Vaculík, Richard Ford, Julian Barns, P. J. O’Rourke, Gore Vidal and even Alan Ginsberg. The motto above the door was: “..in libris veritas; in kava vita.”
I took this photo in the original Globe. These are two of the original Globe owners: Scott Rogers and Jasper Bear. I am presently doing research to find out more about them and what they are doing now. I took a lot of these photos and nothing happened with a lot of them, so, I put them away in a file and that is why I do not remember all of the details. The Globe still exists in a new location at Pštrossova 6 Prague. It still is a great bookshop and cafe with readings and live music.
